Centro Callan is a 196-unit mixed-use community in downtown San Leandro.
Challenge
San Leandro had a downtown plan and a BART station, and no large-scale mixed-use housing to anchor either.
Vision
We built 196 homes over ground-floor retail at East 14th and Callan, the mixed-use anchor the downtown plan called for. The site was the former home of the Portuguese Fraternal Society of America, in a city with deep Portuguese roots.
Results
Delivered in 2025 and stabilized, with ten homes below market rate and nearly 30,000 square feet of retail anchored by Sprouts Farmers Market and Philz Coffee.
Placemaking
Floral Mural
Oakland muralist Jet Martinez works in the vocabulary of Mexican folk art, Oaxacan embroidery and pottery in particular. His large-scale floral mural wraps the exterior of Centro Callan.
