This 8-story, 333-unit residential development is called Webster Eleven. The project showcases a 10,000-square-foot public art piece designed by Julie Chang, a San Francisco-based artist who designed the ground floor of the Grand Hall at the Transbay Terminal. The art piece is a collaboration with Oakland art manufacturer Magnolia Editions. The developers underwent more than 90 public meetings to build community support for the project.

  • Address: 1100 Webster St., Oakland

  • Size: 333 apartments and 23,450 square feet of retail

  • Developer: The Martin Group and Brookfield Properties

  • Development costs: $165 million

  • Architect: BDE Architecture (architect of record); VTBS (design architect)

  • Why it's award-worthy: This brownfield space remediation transformed a former car dealership located on highly contaminated land into new downtown Oakland housing in a transit-oriented development two blocks from the 12th Street BART.
